Gunsmoke began on radio on April 26, 1952. It was the first radio adult western. Storylines strived for realism. William Conrad was the voice of Marshal Matt Dillon. Georgia Ellis was saloon girl Kitty Russell, and Parley Baer was deputy Chester Proudfoot. The popular show came to an end on June 18, 1961.
Springing from the CBS radio program, Gunsmoke began on TV on September 10, 1955 and ended September 1, 1975. It was the longest running series with continuous characters in the history of TV. It began on CBS on Saturday evenings from 10:00 to 10:30. James Arness played Matt Dillon throughout the series.
