COLLECTORS NOTES:
Annie made her first appearance on radio on April 8, 1931. The six-times-per-week show was one of the great premium-givers of all time. It dispensed many items including shake-up mugs and deccoders. "All for a dime and/or the aluminum stip seal from the inside of any Ovaltine can." Copies of this BLB can be found with an ovaltine ad inside the front cover.
A In the early years, the program had one of the best-known themes on the air:
Who's that little chatter box?
The one with the pret-ty auburn-locks?
Who-oo can it be?
It's Little Orphan An-nie!"
The theme was punctuated with "'Wrf' says San-dy."
The first half of this BLB involves Annie's discovery that the "lucky" knife she found actually belonged to Mr. Phineas P. Pinchpenny, the meanest, richest man in town. When pinchpenny ran down a little boy, he dropped his knife at the scene of the crime. When Annie cleaned the knife and saw the initials P.P.P. on it, she figured out its significance.
In the second half of this BLB, Annie and Sandy leave town and go on the road again, meeting up with Uncle Dan, a nice blind man with whom they form a symbiotic relationship. They create a stage play that is quite successful but are cheated out of much of their earnings by their agent, Charles C. Chizzler.
