COLLECTORS NOTES:
In 1934 the Saturday Evening Post magazine lost a popular weekly panel cartoon character, Henry, to King Features Syndicate. To fill the loss, one the magazine's contributors, Marjorie Henderson Buell, was asked to create a replacement for the bald headed Henry. And the replacemeent had to be a girl.
Buell decided that the new character had to be modeled after Henry, so she kept Henry's basic appearance and added long corkscrew curls, a skirt, and girl's shoes. She kept the shoebutton eyes and turned up nose. Even the puffy cheeks were adapted, but later dropped. The magazine editors named the character Little Lulu. And Marjofie signed her cartoon panels as "Marge."
Lulu's first appearance in the Saturday Evening Post was on February 23, 1935, and she remained a regular there until the end of 1944. By then she was appearing in ads for Keenex and was a regular animated movie cartoon character. Her popularity continued through the 50s when she appeared on television.
